TOP 107 RESURRECTION SONGS
Most of our Top 107 lists were put together by The End’s Music Director, harms, and me. But, since I’ve hosted Resurrection Flashback Sunday for years and was doing Seattle radio when a lot of these songs were “currents”, harms let me torture myself putting this list together on my own. Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. And the toughest stuff was at both ends. Figuring out the #1 song from a list of songs that have changed the history of music, stood the test of time and helped form who I am today is nearly impossible. I just figured that The Clash really lived up to being “the only band that matters”; REM is a song you hear as much today as when it first came out, and has one of the all-time best sing-along choruses; Ramones changed everything that came after by stripping their songs down sonically, lyrically (and humorously) and “Blitzkrieg” shows all of that; Violent Femmes “Blister In The Sun” is the best anti-rock song ever, and kids today still know it; and “How Soon Is Now” by The Smiths showcases both Johnny Marr’s amazing playing and Morrissey’s unmatched lyrics. But honestly, you could throw all of the songs in the Top 10 in a cup, shake ‘em up and throw ‘em out in a different order and whatever random order they came out in, I couldn’t argue. On the other end, it was just hard keeping the list to 107. And I had to leave out great, and sometimes important, songs by Duran Duran, Adam Ant, Suicidal Tendencies, Time Zone, Pretenders and more. Ultimately, I went for songs that were great songs (XTC, “Tainted Love”…), huge influences (Pixies, Eurythics synth sound…), huge request/reaction records (Jim Carroll, ‘Rock Lobster’, Dramarama, ‘Peek-A-Boo’…), or I just couldn’t leave off a list like this (Replacements, Specials, “Never Say Never”…). One final note, although this list covers the late 70’s and 80’s, I didn’t include songs that came out in the 80’s, but were just ahead of their time – so you’ll find Jane’s Addiction, ‘Bleach’ and more on the next list.
